A slow soft smile that I didn’t at all like began to spread over Andrew’s mouth. I could practically see the hope budding in his chest. I turned my head away and looked to Vienna. Her smile was gone and she looked ready to commit murder.

I heard Mr. Riverwood say something jovial to Andrew and clap a hand on his shoulder. Of course they would be friends. Andrew was a fortune-hunting rake, and after last night, I was certain Mr. Riverwood was as well.

I imagined that Andrew was still standing there staring at me and formulating some sort of devious plan to win me back. But then I became aware of a different pair of eyes on me. One that tugged at me stronger than Andrew’s ever had. I wanted to look back at Robert, to allow myself to be lost in his both comforting an unnerving attention.

But seeing Andrew again had scared me—reminded me that I had felt strong feelings for a man before. So I forced my gaze straight ahead.

Charlotte drew her horse up next to mine. “Mary,” she said in a pleading whisper. “I’m so sorry. I had no idea he would be coming here! Matthew never even mentioned it to me,” she said, pausing to cast her husband a glare before turning her eyes back to me.

I sighed. “Don’t blame Lord Stanton. He wasn’t in London for that season. I’m sure he doesn’t know anything about the scandal.” I reached across and patted Charlotte’s hand like I would have done to comfort one of my sisters when they needed my strength more than I did. “I’m perfectly fine. He has no hold on me anymore.” But that was a lie. And the fact that I felt like sobbing or vomiting or fainting only confirmed it.

“You’re all right to continue with our plans for the day, then?” She looked as skeptical as I felt.

I could see Andrew mounting his horse out of my periphery, and I wondered if I was strong enough to act on what I was going to say. “Of course. It will be a lovely day, and Andrew—Lord Ashton, that is—cannot do anything to ruin it.” And then I thought of at least a dozen ways that he could.
